Supporting people and places to drive growth

As spring blooms across the English countryside, it's time to celebrate one of the nation's most vibrant and resilient industries: tourism. English Tourism Week is an annual event highlighting tourism's importance in our communities.

14-23 March 2025

English Tourism Week is an annual campaign led by VisitEngland. The celebration has been designed to showcase the quality, range and value of English hotels, restaurants, visitor attractions and local activities. This year's theme, "Supporting people and places to drive growth," resonates deeply as we reflect on the industry's role in driving economic growth and creating countless memories for visitors and locals alike.

Tourism in England

Many people think tourism is going on holiday or travelling for a staycation away from home, meaning we often overlook what is on our doorstep. When was the last time you visited a popular attraction nearby? Use this week to plan your next adventure.

Local tourism is just as important. When did you last eat out or visit your local tourist information centre? Have you attended any business events? The tourism industry also includes conferences, events and weddings.

  1. Economic Impact: In 2022, a staggering £88.93 billion was spent on tourism in England alone, including expenditures from domestic and international visitors.
  2. Domestic Trips: Domestic tourism forms the backbone of the industry, with 107 million overnight trips and 945 million day trips recorded in 2022. These journeys fuel local economies and promote exploration and discovery within our borders.
  3. Inbound Tourism: England's allure extends beyond its shores, attracting 27.8 million inbound trips annually. These visitors bring diverse perspectives, cultural exchanges, and invaluable contributions to our economy.
  4. Employment: Pre-pandemic tourism supported 2.6 million jobs across England. From hospitality to transportation, these roles provide livelihoods for individuals and families, strengthening the social fabric of our communities.
  5. Regional Impact: Tourism thrives in every corner of England. In the South West, where we're based, tourism spending alone reached an impressive £8.4 billion.

As we celebrate English Tourism Week, let's reaffirm our commitment to supporting tourism as the heart of our communities. Whether you're a business owner, a traveller, or a resident, your contributions play a vital role in shaping the future of this dynamic industry.

Show your support for English Tourism Week on social media. Use the hashtag #EnglishTourismWeek25, and tag @VisitEnglandBiz

Enjoy participating in the annual celebration of the people, places, and experiences that help make England great.
