Ashton Court Estate

Country park and mansion with 850 acres of woodland

Free things to do in Bristol

The Ashton Court Estate is now a historic park just 10 minutes from the centre of Bristol. It covers 850 acres of woods and grasslands. Here deer graze just like they did 600 years ago. As well as exciting walks and trails with stunning views across the city, there is an 18-hole pitch and putt golf course, orienteering, mountain biking and a miniature railway.

Ashton Court has been the site of a manor house since the 11th century and has been developed by a series of owners since then. From the 16th to 20th centuries, it was owned by the Smyth family, with each generation changing the house. It was also used as a military hospital in the First World War. In 1936 it was used as the Royal Show venue and as an army transit camp during the Second World War. In 1946 the last of the Smyth family died and the house fell into disrepair before its purchase in 1959 by Bristol City Council.
