What dish will catch your eye on the new menu at Thomas Restaurant in Cardiff? The delicious winter warmers are perfect now that the weather is colder. The chefs have genuinely outdone themselves, creating a menu that warms the body and soul. You want comfort food when away from home and travelling, leaving you satisfied and content before bed.
Cardiff's new menu features locally sourced ingredients and flavours. Whether you're in the mood for something savoury or sweet, there's something for everyone on the winter menu. Not sure where to start? Here are some of our favourite dishes, all bound to leave you satisfied and content.
On a cold or rainy day, there's nothing better than a warming bowl of cawl. The traditional Welsh stew is packed with lamb, vegetables and a tasty broth. Tear a piece of crusty bread and dip it into the steaming bowl. There's so much history behind this dish. For centuries, families across Wales have gathered around a table to share a bowl, with recipes and culinary secrets handed down from generation to generation. Now you can be part of the tradition too.
Don't eat meat? Not to worry. The new menu also features a Mixed Bean Cassoulet with herb dumplings and crusty bread. With perfectly cooked beans and light and fluffy dumplings infused with rosemary and thyme, the dish is finished with a sprinkling of fresh parsley, which beautifully contrasts with the colours and textures.
An ultimate comfort food, treat yourself to a Cumberland ring sausage, creamy mashed potato, garden peas and a rich onion gravy. Is your mouth watering in anticipation? Bangers and Mash, with its traditional combination of flavours, makes the perfect hearty meal.
How about the hot and spicy prawn salad if you fancy a lighter meal? With a crunchy Asian salad, toasted sesame seeds, warm spicy-coated prawns, and soy ginger dressing. The crispness of the salad contrasts exquisitely with the juiciness of the prawns. At the same time, the spicy coating adds a punch of heat, offset by the sweetness of the dressing. This dish is a silent assassin on our new winter menu. Make sure you don't overlook it, as the flavours really pack a punch.
Our tagliatelle with a vegan pesto is served with garlic bread. Pesto and pasta are a match made in heaven. Perfectly cooked tagliatelle and a rich pesto perfectly complement each other. The garlic bread accompanying the pasta has just enough crunch and garlic flavour to make your tastebuds pop.
This dish is also available with a creamed pesto and shaved parmesan for those who don't follow a plant-based or vegan diet.
The Cajun roasted salmon is served with diced herb potatoes and a panache of vegetables in garlic butter. This dish's combination of spices and flavours will surely leave you craving more. The fish is roasted in the oven alongside the herby potatoes. This pairs perfectly with the creamy, rich sauce blended with garlic, butter and a hint of lemon juice for a smooth, velvety sauce.
Do you have room for more?
They say dessert leaves a lasting impression on the tastebuds. So, what would you pick?
The vegan chocolate and cherry cheesecake comes with a side of cherry sorbet. From the first bite, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the rich and creamy texture, which is perfectly complimented by the tartness of the cherry sorbet. Even those who aren't vegan can't resist wanting seconds.
The crème caramel will also be a popular dessert with silky smooth custard and a rich caramel sauce. You won’t get enough of the silky texture and smooth flavour. The classic dish was an obvious choice for the new winter menu.
For those wanting something a little more rustic, the apple and rhubarb crumble has a cinnamon and ginger crumb and is served with custard. The warmth of the crumb pairs beautifully with the tartness of the fruit, and the creaminess of the custard really rounds off the dish's flavours.
