Plymouth Watersports & Family Friendly Activities
One of the best ways to appreciate Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, is from the water. There are plenty of opportunities to dive in and enjoy the sea from boat trips to paddle-boarding, kayaking or sailing and rowing.
Tinside Lido
Set in a beautiful location overlooking the sea at the tip of Plymouth Hoe is Tinside Lido. It has been voted one of the top 10 best outdoor pools in Europe, so it is an attraction not to be missed. As well as the pool itself, the facility also features a sun deck, which is one of the best places in Plymouth to soak up the sun. It is open during the summer months, and the fantastic outdoor saltwater swimming pool caters for both local people and visitors to Plymouth.
Plymouth Boat Trips
Plymouth Boat Trips is the South West’s premier cruising, ferry and fishing company. From sight-seeing cruises, private charters and party nights to connecting ferries and fun-packed fishing trips – there’s something for everyone. They are located on The Barbican, where their boats depart. All equipment and safety gear is provided onboard, so you don’t need to bring a thing, simply dress for the weather!
Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre
There’s a vast range of activities you can enjoy at the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre. From sailing to stand-up paddle-boarding, kayaking to multi-adventure days. The Centre also hosts Kayak Tours – explore Plymouth Sound from the water and see the City’s historical and picturesque waterfront from a different perspective. The Kayak Tours last for three hours or five hours and start from just £32.50 per person.
Plymouth and Devon Schools Sailing Association
There are a range of sail, paddle and powerboat activities at the Plymouth and Devon Schools Sailing Association. They can be found near the iconic Mayflower Steps. The Plymouth Sound provides an excellent environment for all levels of ability. Their calendar is full of exciting ways to have fun, learn or try something a little different.
South West Stand Up Paddle-Boarding
Based in Royal Williams Yard, South West Stand Up Paddle-Boarding (SUP) offer tuition and paddle-board hire. They are very popular with families, stag and hen groups and for team building activities. They offer two-hour or half-day sessions for beginners to try out this popular activity. It may look relaxing, but it’ll give you a whole-body workout, and help improve your balance too. You can even take a Drake’s Island SUP Tour. It is 2km in total to the island and back.
Aquanauts Dive Centre
The Aquanauts Dive Centre is located at Sutton Harbour. Plymouth's diving is some of the best in the country. There are more wrecks per mile of coastline around Plymouth than anywhere else in the rest of the world, and as such the diving here is extremely varied. From gentle reef to stark remarkable drop-offs consisting of granite boulders and cliffs falling away to extreme depths.
Safety First
If you are not using one of the registered facilities, please ensure that you take the necessary precautions to prevent from getting into difficulty. The RNLI also has tips on how to stay safe in the water.
