The Mayflower Museum

Overlooking the harbour in the Barbican area, the Mayflower Museum is a must-visit, especially for those interested in Plymouth's maritime legacy. Often referred to as the Plymouth Ship Museum due to its impressive model of the Mayflower, it tells the story of the 1620 voyage to the New World.

Located above the Tourist Information Centre, the museum brings the Mayflower Story to life through engaging displays and interactive exhibits. It's an excellent stop for those exploring Plymouth's waterfront, with the cobbled streets of the Barbican offering plenty of charm.

A small admission fee applies - currently £5 per adult, with concessions for children, seniors and students.

Elizabethan House

Also, in the Barbican, the newly restored Elizabethan House invites you to experience what life was like in 17th-century Plymouth. This historic property is beautifully preserved, giving visitors a rare glimpse into the lives of its former inhabitants through immersive storytelling and original features. Visiting here is a real treat for those fascinated by history and local heritage.

Please note that the house is open seasonally, typically from April to September, and there is a small entrance fee. Currently, £5 is for adults, with concessions for children, seniors, and students. It's advisable to check opening hours in advance to plan your visit.

Crownhill Fort

Just a few miles from the city centre but a 9-minute walk from Future Inn Plymouth, Crownhill Fort is one of the best-preserved Victorian forts in the UK. With its massive walls, underground tunnels, and historic cannons, it offers a fascinating journey into Plymouth's military past.

Open on selected days for tours and special events - typically once a month; it's worth checking in advance for opening hours. The fort also hosts educational programmes and is a brilliant off-the-beaten-track option for those keen to explore more of the region's hidden gems.

Tickets need to be purchased in advance. Currently, they are £5 per adult with discounts for children. If you want to drive, there is also a small parking fee.

Devonport Naval Heritage Centre

Previously known as the Plymouth Maritime Museum, the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre showcases the city's strong ties to the Royal Navy. Through a wide array of artefacts, models, and documents, you'll gain insight into how Plymouth is known for its naval importance.

It's a compelling destination for adults and children, particularly those interested in maritime history and engineering. Check out their What's On section to see their open days - generally every Wednesday and the second Saturday of the month in the Spring and Summer. There is no admission fee, but donations are appreciated to cover running costs.
