Cycling staycation in Plymouth

As well as cycling along Plymouth’s Barbican and Sutton Harbour, the city provides a great base for those wanting to explore the stunning scenery and local history on offer. With numerous National Trust estates, the Dartmoor National Park and coastal routes nearby, you will have plenty of exciting trails to choose from, you may even come across a Dartmoor pony or two.

Around the Barbican, you'll find vibrant cobbled streets, narrow lanes and more than 200 Listed Buildings, many of them Tudor and Jacobean. Find at spot to stop in Sutton Harbour and watch the boats. There are two National Cycle Routes on the harbour’s doorstep.

Dartmoor National Park

Dartmoor is a great place to cycle with an extensive network of quiet lanes and designated cycle routes, together with over 350km of bridleways and byways. Routes include Granite Way, Drake's Trail, Wray Valley Trail and even the full Dartmoor Way which is 95 mile circular route.

Plymbridge Woods

Plymbridge Woods is looked after by the National Trust. The Plym Valley consists of varied habitats from riverside meadows, ancient woodland and the wilderness of Dartmoor. Car parks at Plymbridge, Cadover Bridge and Shaugh Prior provide good starting points to explore the area on bike.

This two mile trail through woodlands and beside the Plym estuary is perfect for a family bike ride with plenty of picnic stops on route. Cycle through rolling parkland, past ancient oaks and seasonal spectacles like spring bluebells, summer flower meadows and autumn woodland colours.

Lanhydrock

Whatever your experience as a cyclist, there's bound to be a trail to suit you at Lanhydrock. It is another National Trust property. Ride through woodland and choose from a range of flat or hillier routes. There are green (easy), blue (moderate) and even red (difficult) trails.

Route 27

The National Cycle Network Route 27 is also known as the Devon Coast to Coast. It is 102 miles long, and largely traffic free and flat for 71 miles of the route. It runs from Ilfracombe to Plymouth. The route has beaches, estuaries, lush green valleys and takes you through tunnels and across the breathtaking viaducts and bridges.

What is the National Cycle Network?

The National Cycle Network (NCN) is being developed by Sustrans in partnership with local authorities and other organisations. There are two cycling outes that run through Plymouth; NCN route 27 - Devon Coast to Coast route, which is mostly off-road from Plymouth to Ilfracombe and includes the recently opened Laira Rail Bridge and NCN route 2 - Southern Coastal route, from Cornwall to Dover.
