The Mayflower Museum

Plymouth Mayflower Museum | Plymouth Pilgrim Museum | Mayflower 400

Mayflower Museum Plymouth

Over three floors, The Mayflower Centre experience explores the story of the Pilgrims' voyage aboard the Mayflower to the New World on 6 September 1620. The Mayflower Museum is located above the Tourist Information Centre on The Barbican. The top floor balcony also has a fantastic panoramic view of the historic Barbican.

Mayflower Exhibition

Visitors can learn the story of the puritans as the epic journey begins. The 2 month voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to free religious persecution in the UK. It follows the lives of the 150 passengers over the course of their arduous journey from Plymouth to America. This voyage is seen as notable as it is viewed as the first settlement of the modern USA. This colony went on to thrive in America, and at their first harvest, they began the American tradition known as Thanksgiving.

The gallery features a model of the Mayflower Ship built on a 1:11 inch scale by apprentices at Devonport Royal Dockyard for the 350th year anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims sailing from Plymouth. The model features 360 fathoms of rigging, 332 handmade blocks and six handmade sails totalling 64 square feet in area.

Mayflower 400

Although events were largely disrupted by COVID-19, in 2020, Plymouth celebrated Mayflower 400 - the anniversary of the pioneering voyage. In England, the commemoration focused on the key towns and cities that make up the national Mayflower trail. Plymouth was at the heart of it.

Mayflower Steps

The Mayflower Steps are near the Mayflower Museum in the Barbican. The Pilgrims are believed to have finally left England aboard the Mayflower here before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The Mayflower Steps are flanked by British and American flags. The actual steps the pilgrims left from no longer exist. A granite block bearing the ship’s name marks the approximate site, while a tablet commemorating the voyage was erected alongside it in 1891.
