What is Black Friday?
The phrase originates from the United States and is applied to the day after Thanksgiving, where it was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur. However, here in the UK, it was adopted by the Police and emergency services to refer to the Friday before Christmas when revellers pack their local pubs, bars and restaurants.
UK retailers have jumped on the bandwagon over the last few years, so bargain-hunters now get the chance to snap up incredible deals in the lead-up to Christmas.
Black Friday marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Retailers often help shoppers “keep in the black” by offering discounts and promotions during gift-buying. Typically, it tends to be the busiest shopping day of the year. Hordes of shoppers invade their favourite stores, desperate to make the most of the deals.
Initially, the sales began early on Friday, with retailers opening the doors sometimes as early as 4am. More recently, more offers are being put online to take the pressure off front-line staff and facilities such as parking.
Some people have been so keen to get the best deals in the past that employees have been left trampled in some of your favourite shops, and chaotic scenes have been witnessed.
We think so! While some bargains are to be had, shoppers are advised to research before rushing to buy. It is easy to get swept along by the hype and excitement on the day, so make sure you are getting a good deal when hitting the sales.
This year, Black Friday is on Friday 29 November 2024, but many retailers have already started discounting. So, it is the perfect time to grab a bargain.
Unlike Black Friday, which evolved from the US, Cyber Monday is an online-only sale started in the UK. For some, it's the last chance to bag a bargain before all the Black Friday discounts end. Traditionally, it is the first Monday after the final payday before Christmas and when shoppers start their Christmas gift-buying in earnest. This year, it is on Monday 2 December 2024.
